Hugowels
Hugowels (born 1950°) studied architecture at La Cambre (ENSAV, Brussels). After his studies, he immediately turned to painting. He was apprenticed to Gilbert Herreyns for 2 years, before returning to La Cambre to study fine art conservation and restoration.
At the beginning of the 1980s, after several stays abroad (Italy, France), the artist moved to an atelier in the old "Vandam KH" studios in the centre of Brussels, where he would work for more than 20 years. He rarely exhibited, however, all these years his works were sold directly to collectors through an agent.
In the period that followed, the artist concentrated mainly on short films, including the award-winning "Tempus Fugit" (2002).
Around 2013, the artist returned to painting. Where he had previously worked in a more impulsive and expressionist way, he now moved towards a more philosophical and metaphysical approach, still with a very personal style and technique.
For Hugowels, painting is a “pensée non verbale” or, like Leonardo da Vinci stated, “pittura è mental”.
